Can an electric roadside jack kit really replace the scissor jack in the trunk? Nine jacks went head to head to answer it: five electric kits (ABN, TYAYT, Standtall, Wayska, and the E-HEELP electric scissor jack) against four conventional designs — a $23 Torin scissor jack as the factory-style control, a $38 Big Red bottle jack, a Neiko aluminum floor jack, and a Vevor inflatable exhaust jack.

Every jack lifted a car, then a much heavier vehicle to 2,800 pounds of lift, then a tractor to find its true maximum, and finally took a hydraulic press load until it failed. Since the electric kits bundle an impact wrench and tire inflator, those got timed too — including lug nuts deliberately over-torqued to 250 ft-lbs.

Prices span $23 for the manual scissor-jack control to $200 for the Wayska kit. The electric kits bundle a jack, impact wrench, and (except the E-HEELP) a tire inflator, so the price gap versus a bare jack buys a full roadside toolkit.

Time to Lift a Car Wheel Off the Ground

Seconds — lower is faster

Lifting the front wheel of a mid-size car. The manual floor jack is untouchable at 10 seconds, but the story is effort, not time: the electric jacks do their 40-odd seconds of work at the push of a button while a scissor jack demands 43 seconds of cranking. The Vevor exhaust jack lifted easily from an air compressor, but neither test car could build enough exhaust pressure to inflate it — worth knowing before counting on exhaust power alone.

Time to Reach 2,800 lb of Lift

Seconds on a heavier vehicle — lower is faster

Repeating the lift on a much heavier vehicle. The manual jacks stay quicker — the Neiko and the bottle jack finished in half the time of most electric kits — but the 1.5-ton Torin scissor jack control had to be stopped at 2,000 lb as it began leaning and bending, a thousand pounds under its own rating. The factory-style jack was the only one that couldn't finish this test.

How much each jack actually lifted before running out of travel or power. The $100 E-HEELP crushed its 3-ton rating at 7,030 lb, while the ABN and TYAYT — both rated for far more — gave up early in their raised stages. Lift-point height matters enormously: lowering the point with a 4x4 block added about 700 lb for the TYAYT and pushed the Standtall from roughly 4,000 to 5,300 lb, and the Wayska's included tall support head is a big part of its 5,800 lb second-place finish.

The destructive finale: loading each jack until something gave. The $38 bottle jack — rated for 4,000 lb — held 28,000 before losing ground, and the ABN matched it in its lowered position before blowing a hydraulic seal. The TYAYT blew a seal at 20,400 lb. The E-HEELP reached almost 8,500 lb before its electric motor detached, and the Torin scissor jack folded at 7,300 when a pin broke. Every jack carried multiples of its rating — but the hydraulic designs carried the most.

Average of three lug nuts torqued to 150 ft-lbs — already more than most vehicles call for. Every kit's wrench handled it in seconds; the ABN led at 3.37 on average. The over-tightened-by-the-tire-shop scenario: 250 ft-lbs, the kind of torque that defeats a lot of hand tools. Every kit's impact wrench eventually broke the nut loose — a genuinely impressive result for bundled wrenches — with the ABN needing ten impacts over 5.82 seconds and the E-HEELP right behind.

Tire Inflator Performance

Minutes to inflate a flat 15-inch tire to 30 PSI

From completely flat to 30 PSI, verified against reference gauges. The ABN was quickest at about five and a half minutes, with the rest close behind. The Wayska is the only inflator with a programmable auto-stop — convenient, though its shutoff read about 2 PSI off the verified pressure. The E-HEELP kit is the one electric jack sold without an inflator.

Full-kit weights. The electric kits cluster around 18–22 lb — hefty for a trunk, light for what they do — while the bottle jack undercuts everything at under 6 lb. The Verdict

Judging the kits on jack, wrench, and inflator together, the ABN takes the top spot: the fastest impact wrench at both torque levels, the fastest tire inflator, and a hydraulic ram that survived 28,000 lb in the failure test. Its weakness is lifting reach — in its raised stage it managed only 3,400 lb, so it's best matched to cars and lighter SUVs lifted from a sensible jacking point.

The E-HEELP is the lift champion at 7,030 lb — double its 3-ton rating — and its wrench nearly matched the ABN's, all for around $100. It skips the tire inflator, and its motor is the part that eventually failed at 8,500 lb of press load. The Wayska justifies some of its $200 price with the tallest lift (20.5 inches with its extra support head) and 5,800 lb of max lift, but its wrench hits fastest and softest, and it was the slowest to 2,800 lb.

The conventional jacks earned their places too. The $38 Big Red bottle jack is the quiet hero of the whole comparison: second-fastest to 2,800 lb, over 5,000 lb of real lift, a 28,000 lb failure load, and the most compact package at 164 cubic inches. Keeping one in the trunk alongside any electric kit covers nearly every failure mode. The factory-style scissor jack is the cautionary tale — it bent at 2,000 lb, well under its rating, and folded at 7,300 in the press. And the exhaust jack is a niche tool: huge lift height for off-road recovery, but only if there's an air compressor or a leak-free, high-flow exhaust to feed it.
